INSIDE
THE SAFETY MANUAL - HAZARD
A
Hazard could be said to be any act or condition that has the potential
to harm, injure or damage. In practical terms, hazard often is associated
with condition or activity/task. Hazard if left uncontrolled, can result
to either injury, illness or damage which may as it were be minor, medium
or high. Identifying hazards andeliminating or controlling them as early
as possible will help to prevent or mitigate the consequences or impact
resulting from
triggered hazards.
What is a job hazard analysis?
A job hazard analysis is a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way
to identify hazards before they occur. It focuses on the relationship
between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work environment. Ideally,
after you identify hazards, you will take steps to eliminate or reduce
them to an acceptable risk level.
Why is job hazard analysis important?
Many workers are injured and killed at the workplaces due to absence of
the job hazard analysis. Safety and health can add value to your business,
your job, and your life. You can help prevent workplace injuries and illnesses
by looking at your workplace operations, establishing proper job procedures,
and ensuring that all employees are trained properly. One of the best ways
to determine and establish proper work procedures is to conduct a job
hazard analysis. A job hazard analysis is one component of the larger
commitment of safety and health management system. Its importance cannot
be
overemphasized but could be seen as follows:
1. Identification of inherent hazards associated with a task.
2. Outlining of adequate control or mitigating measure.
3. Establishment of proper work procedure.
4. Identification of appropriate work materials /tools.
5.Outlining of adequate supervisory/monitoring techniques etc.
What jobs are appropriate for a job hazard analysis?
Job hazard analysis can be conducted on any job in your workplace. However,
priority should be given to jobs that are adjudged of possessing high
or medium injury or illness or damage consequence or severity. It is important
to note that all kinds of jobs have their associated hazards hence it
is imperative to appropriately analyze job associated hazards in order
to effectively manage them. This is because an operation considered the
least
could have the highest potential hazards unless otherwise noted through
proper hazard analysis.
HEALTH
TIPS:
ADVANTAGES
OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE
For maintenance of perfect health, exercise is no less important than
diet. The reason why our ancestors could be said to have lived healthier
and stronger than us today is because they were comparatively involved
in the execution of exercise-like activities.
Today man has become very lazy and less involve in exercise as a result
of several kinds of mechanization. And this has exposed man to fatigue
and associated illnesses. To manage man’s health, physical exercise
is of essence as it helps to initiate proper circulation, respiration,
perspiration, weight sharing and metabolism. Here, a short account of
the salutary effects of
exercise on various organs and systems of the body is expressed:
1. Heart and circulatory system: Regular exercise makes the heart muscles
stronger and more efficient. The heart-beats of an athlete do not increase
appreciably even when doing something requiring physical exertion, and
revert very soon to the normal rate afterwards. In contrast, even a little
exertion sends the pulse rate of a sedentary individual rocketing up,
and it takes time for the heart to settle down to its normal rate of beating.
The blood vessels dilate during exercise, and so more blood reaches the
muscles. It has been found that during vigorous or rapid exercise, the
blood circulation in certain muscles and organs increases 25 to 30 times,
thus supplying the muscles and organs with more oxygen and a larger number
of red blood corpuscles.
2. The respiratory system: Breathing becomes not only more rapid, but
also deeper, thus making increased quantities of oxygen available.
3. The digestive system: The secretion of the digestive juices is stimulated
by exercise. Thus digestion becomes more efficient. Exercises also stimulate
the intestinal movements (peristalsis), resulting in more effective elimination
of wastes.
4. The musculature: Regular exercise strengthens the muscles, promotes
their development and increases their efficiency. Stronger muscles lend
better support to the joints.
5. The skin: The pores of the skin open up during exercise. The result
is a healthier skin, because of more efficient disposal of impurities
and dirt.
6. Temperature of the body: The temperature of the body rises during exercise.
This promotes the burning up of the toxic substances in the body.
SAFETY TIPS
WHILE MAKING PURCHASE OF PROPERTY( Land)
1. Define
what you want to use the property for (if residential for instance, don’t
buy in an area planned for industrial use etc)
2. Confirm accessibility to the plot ( some unscrupulous vendors don’t
provide access roads to individual plots)
3. Confirm nature of terrain
4. Satisfy yourself with the title of vendor
5. Patronize professionals (surveyors, planners, lawyers etc), avoid quacks
and touts.
6. Insist on authentic witnesses while signing agreement
